Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement Speech and Video

I enjoyed the stories and things that Steve had to say they were very applicable to those that were in the audience that day, I assume, and to me, I don't assume. I thought that his point on after getting fired from Apple that the reason he was still successful was because he loved what he was doing. That is so important in life and going forward with anything if you don't love it then stop what you're doing or change!  I also liked that he talked about death and essentially his exit strategy, that he said don't let life pass you by, live your life the way you want to rather than the way that other people would like you to live it. Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.

Steve Jobs and the 7 Rules of Success

1-Do what you love, 2-Put a dent in the universe, 3-Make connections, 4-Say no to 1,000 things, 5-Create insanely different experiences, 6-Master the message, and 7-Sell dreams, not products; these are all just golden! you won't find these other than maybe make connections and do what you love in any business class or course, but so many business owners I guarantee you would not only accept these but agree whole-heartedly because they have done the same things. When you implement these things and this type of a mindset to your business, look out world because here you come!

A Special Report on Entrepreneurship
This discusses five myths of entrepreneurs, they are:
1-That entrepreneurs are orphans or outcasts
2-That most entrepreneurs are just out of short trousers, meaning they are young people
3-That entrepreneurship is mainly driven by venture capital
4-Or to be a good entrepreneur you have to create a world changing new product
5-That entrepreneurship cannot flourish in big companies
These are all truly myths that generalize what are available to what an entrepreneur can do, and if there is anything that I have learned about entrepreneurs is that you don't tell an entrepreneur what they can and cannot do, because whatever you said they'll do the opposite and more. Entrepreneurs don't have limitations, some because of their drive and internal clock, others because of their passion for what they are doing, and others because they don't have time to factor in those limitations.

Famous Failures

I really like this video and I look up to so many of those people, others I admire for their tenacity and passion to not give in to what people said or thought of them. I really like that last statement though if you've never failed, you've never tried something new. They all worked hard to be where they ended up or are, and they deserve the success for sure. You will fail, eventually, but it's not that you accept that you will fail that will finally help you reach a point and plane you haven't been before, but it's when you understand that you will not always be successful and that in order to reach success you need to take risks and those risks you take will put you out in places of vulnerability and at the most susceptible place for failure.

Tom Nall

You cannot be afraid to fail and fall. Learning to sell was an important skill that he learned early on. You had to be more creative because you were competing with the big companies. I am optimistically scared. Entrepreneurs take calculated risks. I wanted to give them the chance like I was give as a young person, we also want to hire people that want to do things that might not be the normal way the industry does things. Company based on honesty and the golden rule.

Week 13
This was an awesome experience this entire class, I really liked the information and that was given to us and I learned a ton of stuff. I really enjoyed the things that I heard the other students wanted to start up and what they were doing and it has been a fun to see those things that they are passionate about. Bro. Nygren though has been a really great push and good influence on wanting to start businesses I love his passion and desire to always do more and provide opportunities for employment. The United States is the land of opportunity and America is great because America is good! Thank you Bro. Nygren.

What an awesome forum! It was so much fun to be at, Bro. McChesney has just a vibrant personality and it made it so much fun to be there and listen in on. Some of the things I really liked about his presentation. He began by stating that the hardest thing for leaders to do was execution. Then he laid out the 4 Disciplines of Execution and they are: 1) Focus on the Wildly Important, 2) Act on the Lead Measures, 3) Keep a Compelling Scoreboard, and 4) Create a Cadence of Accountability. Some of those things he stated that would help in staying focused was that you only focus on 2-3 goals, because: there will always be more good ideas than there is capacity to execute; so just focus on a couple ideas and complete those then work on a couple more. Referring to Discipline 3 Bro. McChesney said an important thing to remember, "People play differently when they are keeping score. Then as Bro. McChesney was finishing up with his last discipline of execution he said that you need to have a WIG (Wildly Important Goal) meeting, where you personally state in front of the rest of your team/group 1-What your commitments were from last week, 2-Review and update the Scoreboard, and 3-Make commitments for that week; Bro. McChesney said this was important because it was a "Pull meeting and not a Push meeting," where everyone was accountability for and to themselves which is better than any boss that would be telling you what to do and checking up on it later.

The Advantages of Owning an Existing Business
This article goes over the basic benefits of buying an existing business so it is a good "Pro" section of a "Pro vs. Con" list if you are thinking about buy a business rather than starting up a new business.
12 Keys to Family Business Success
That's just so crazy to me that 1 out of 3 family businesses will actually make it to the next generation! I thought that point at the very beginning of the article was great, that before a family member comes into your business you need to set out the ground rules: you need to be clear about their specific roles within the company, what their compensation will be, and what exit plans there are, that way they become a problem for you down the road. I also like the two points the make sure that all jobs and roles are put into writing that way there is no mistaking, and also if you are going to have family members come work for you, make sure they at least 3-5 years experience elsewhere preferably in another field or industry so they can learn how businesses work in the real world.
You Be the Consultant
I like this article/assignment it shows legitimately what happens within these family businesses, I've watched them happen. I feel like Richard should choose Paul, if he feels that Paul is the one that is closest to his idea of what the business is then that is who you give it to, because then they will do things the way you would have and any changes made they would be the ones you would have made or better. To let his kids know about taking over, he needs to just make the decision and trust it and stop worrying about it, but the two older kids need to respect the decision and deal with it.
Social Entrepreneurship: Kiva
That was a cool article on Kiva I was glad I got to read that little history of it and see some of the things they had to do to start it up.
The Social Entrepreneur's Pledge
I agree! I pledge to do these things! This is actually what I want to do in business, is to help people, I don't have a great desire to earn a lot of money and have all these special things and toys. I want to provide for my family, of course, and make sure they have security and protection, but then I want to just help people in any way and every way I can. So I whole-heartedly agree to this!

Neil Blumenthal / Warby Parker
I like that fact that he said our goal from day one was, "What are we trying to do here?" and they decided to make a stay-culturecentric company where they were caring for everyone that is a part of their company and business. Personally I could really tell the Neil cares a great deal about what he is doing and how he is helping people all over the world, and changing the world.
BYUTV: Intersect Fund
That's crazy to think that if 1 out of 3 businesses just hired 1 person that our country would be at full employment. I was going to say when I saw the stuff for Kiva, I was thinking to myself, "Where is this for the people in the United States? Why isn't someone doing this here?" So I am glad to see that these two guys are doing

Week 12
This week has been good, a lot about franchises and family businesses this week. Family business is my interest and what I want to develop, regardless of the business is so I enjoyed reading the things that were given to us this week so I could really understand what the problems were and the benefits and some of the things that are involved with these types of businesses.

This was a pretty cool case study I thought. I saw in it ways that you should go about trying to find existing businesses to own if that is what you wanted to do. I thought their way of using advertisement was really good and something I wouldn't have thought of. But what I felt was most important for this case was that Tim had the connections and gave/made them available to Brad for him to use in his effort at starting/owning a business. So it just showed me how important it is to have an experienced mentor whether that is your Dad or not but someone who has been "there" and done "that" so that you don't have to go through the same trials they had to go through learning the hard way.

Starting a New Business: Franchising vs. New Venture
This helped to show some important differences between a start-up and a franchise. Though it still doesn't change the fact that I would do a start-up still, it would be helpful for someone to read that is thinking about starting a business and to give them another option that they might not have thought of.
Franchising Know How
This article gave some vital information on what is required from the franchisor and franchisee to making this business agreement work. Which franchising a business is just really a business agreement that the two parties agree to, for the franchisor agrees to allow the franchisee to use the name and rights associated with their brand and product, etc.
Franchising Checklist
This is an excellent article especially if you are searching for a franchise to buy and start running. It gives great questions and information for you to ask and find out about that would be so helpful and pertinent when thinking about finding a business to start through the form of a franchise.
Crisis Quickens at Quiznos
This article helped show that even with the benefit of a franchise over you that can help you out if you are struggling as a business that there are some things that still cause issues enough franchisees have to close their doors. But this focused a lot on the fact that these franchisees were required to buy from certain suppliers and their locations they felt were not great and caused confusing.

True Success
Doing the best you can and trying to better the situation you are in. Success is huge for so many people but I love that John Wooden, who I've always admired him as a coach and teacher, defines situation this way. I also like that he focused a lot of scripture and the word of God and applying it to his life. These things that stood for like never being late and being clean are so important and especially theprinicples that it built upon. Start on time and end on time, never go t late on practice, no profanity, all these were great things that he transferred to others from great advice his father gave him. I agree with the fact that he feels that word and honor were also huge for Coach Wooden. But I don't think that there is any doubt that the pinnacle of his success pyramid were faith and hope. The shining trophies on our shelves will not win tomorrow's game. Dont whine, complain, and do whatever you're doing at the best of your ability. Make sure that people who see you after the game they cannot tell that you lost if you did.

Corey Bell
I like that he made it so that his company had the mentality that there's was no option to say it can't be done or its not possible. The fact that he went back to what he had planned and wanted to do is huge and that re-evaluation I feel is huge in moving forward and growing in anything that you decide to do.I appreciate that he doesn't feel that entitlement should be even apart of this world, since we owe the world. I really liked that he took his siblings and family in when his parents died, even if he didn't succeed in business that would be enough to show that he really cares about people.
Nicole Donnelly
Through lots of struggles she was able to find an idea for a business that could be successful and helped out her family. She also was able to work through some of the other problems that would be issues that could have been deterrents to others in her situation.
